Day 20 out of 30 – The Minimalism Game

2 x pairs of heels, 1 x comic book, 1 x iPhone packaging box, 2 x Pokemon DS Games, 5 x power-plugs / adapters, 1 x deck of cards, 7 x misc electrical cords, 1 x old iMac keyboard, 1 x old medium-format camera negative, 1 x medal, 2 x packaging boxes
The Why…

Such a satisfying afternoon today! I had just come from a Kinesiology session today, clearing a bit of mental junk that was getting stuck in the forefront of my mind. I went into the session, feeling pretty flat, and tired, like the whole world was just grey and fuzzy. An hour later and I’m dancing around the nearby park, blasting Taylor Swift in my ears singing like a lunatic, everything now a bright array of rainbow.

For me, my monthly kinesiology session is just like a check up, go in once a month, clean out any muck in my head, and then I’m sent off into the world again!

The last few days, this challenge has felt tough, forces and just pretty blah. Now I’m beginning to experience the many benefits of living a life with fewer possessions and it’s incredibly satisfying. Today it was so easy to find 20 items to remove, I even went over today’s challenge minimum! Plus, I already know another 10 possessions that are ready to go tomorrow!

It is comforting to know that after drudging through a bit of a drudgy, dull and frustrating week that this challenge has started to cultivate its rewards.

It will be strange however when I start a day without throwing something away!

  1. Ohhh… the tech stuff! I have discarded some things and I had already donated an old TV before I started the challenge. But the funny thing is, I suspect I’ll keep finding stuff to get rid of even after the challenge ends. Perhaps the whole point of it is precisely not to get stuck on the first easy days. Those are really easy and yes, they motivate us…but then we reach day 20 or so, and we start struggling. When this happened to me, I think I became more creative, I really thought about every item I have in my flat. I kept going through rooms I had already checked and found more stuff to discard. I think that this is when we embrace the minimalist attitude. Not because we are discarding item after item, but because we are re-assessing our possessions, why we keep them and what they bring to our life.
    So… well done for making it to this stage! Wish you all the best for the final 10 days 🙂

    1. Thanks Sara! Oh yes, I’ve just gone through all my camera gear again today and found more but you’re right. I completely agree, you do refine more and more everytime you revisit “cleared” areas. For me I think I get more picky everyday as I have to harshly justify every little thing, even things I think are important. The first days are just removing the things you know you don’t need or care about and the later days are things you keep out of sentiment or “just in case”. It’s been a very enlightening journey so far. Thanks for the advice 🙂
